Killarney Name : Cill Airne, meaning "church of sloes"
On Sep 5th 2011 Killarney was named Ireland's tidiest town (similar to the award it won in 2007).

Historical Milestones :For centuries Killarney has welcomed visitors from far and wide to Ireland's most beautiful destination.
In the mid-1700's, Killarney began to develop as a town and as Ireland's first visitor destination. There are many features within the town's architecture which date back to the early and mid-1800's. The oldest is Killarney House - Other buildings of note are; Deenagh Lodge (1834), Killarney Courthouse (1835), Killarney Railway Station (1853), The Malton Hotel(Formerly the Great Southern - 1854), the Pugin designed St. Mary's Cathedral (1842-1855), the Pugin designed and influenced Bishop's House & Seminary (1860-61), The Old Monastery (1861), Presentation Convent & School (1875-86), Franciscan Friary (1867) and St. Mary's Church of Ireland (1812-89).
Killarney is the ultimate base for touring in Ireland's spectacular Southwest. It is centrally located and is the automatic start & finish point for doing the Ring Of Kerry and The Dingle Peninsula. It also has the world class hospitality facilities demanded by today's discerning traveller.

  • In the Town Centre is the French Chateau style Killarney House - residence of the Earls of Kenmare and home to Thomas 4th Viscount Kenmare, - the Founding Father of Killarney Town and of Irish Tourism in 1754.

A visit to Killarney, or indeed Kerry, is not complete without a visit to the world renowned Muckross House & Gardens. One of Ireland's most popular visitor attractions, this magnificent Victorian mansion was built in 1843 on the shore of the middle lake set in the heart of the 26,000 acre (now) national park.
